From The Ashes.....

Right so Clan Raukaan arrived, and my plans swiftly departed. No named Character in the book means that my plans to do an Iron Hands army for BW have been shelved (or Iron Hands have been demoted to Allied role) meaning I have a new opening for a Primary Detachment. I still intend to use a Fortress of Redemption so the army really needed to fit with that. No point having a fortress of Redemption in a fast army..

Fortunately after a few chats with friends a solution has been concocted. I am now planning on doing an Imperial Guard army (with or without Iron Hands allies) defending a Fortress of Redemption. The Title of this post is actually a teaser for the army....

Iron Hands (Provisionally)

Well I have provisionally decided that I will be doing an Iron Hands army for Blog Wars 7 using the upcoming Clan Raukaan Supplement (I love supplements!!!). This is obviously currently in the hope that they decide to add a character to the army so the list will be supported by the Blog Wars rules pack. I have also decided on the centrepiece of the army. It's something I haven't seen used before and have always wanted to try, and here it is;

So to summarise my plan will be an Iron Hands force, sheltering in and around a Fortress of Redemption. What do you guys think?

Bitten by The Bug!

Yes Folks, I've been bitten by the bug! I am not referring to the large amount of Tyranid players at Blog Wars 6 but rather to the event itself. I absolutely loved the event and the atmosphere and as such I am hooked. I am already planning my army for Blog Wars 7 next year!

At the moment I am thinking something power armoured. I would love to do Iron Hands but they currently have no character. I am waiting for the Clan Raukaan book to be released in the hope it includes a character. Plus I think supplement codices may be my Blog Wars "Thing". I took Farsight Enclave last time (and placed with it!) and hopefully will be able to take Iron Hands for the next one. Maybe I need to start thinking about 8 next November too.........

Blog Wars 6- Result!

Well I don't know how it happened but somehow, in my first ever Tournament games, I managed to come in 3rd Place.

I will write more about this at some point but I would much rather post this just to say thank-you to everyone for making it a great day. I would especially like to thank Chris Buckle. I had played him a week or so before the day in preparation for the inevitable Nidzilla lists I could see going. It was a relatively close game that taught me a few things (mainly, don't let the Doom get near 2 Riptides because they will go away!). Being drawn against him for the first game actually made me quite nervous but fortunately the dice gods smiled upon me and I ended the game with 28 Tournament Points out of 25! First Tournament game ever and I break maths! It helped a lot!

Marines... One Week In

So it has been a week already since the Space Marine codex was unleashed upon us. What have 7 days taught me:

1) it is a wonderfully varied Codex and is definitely a step up from the previous edition.

2) I love Imperial Fists. Hands down my personal favourite chapter tactics, possibly because I am forever rolling 1's to hit.

3) I am a Centurion Convert. From pictures I hated them, now I freaking love this cool tin cans!! And also in the one game I have played I fielded 2 units and they were devastating (specifically the assault centurions with flames and hurricane bolsters against a blob of guard- messy!)

4) I like grab weapons in limited amounts. I am using an anti-infantry devastation centurion unit with 2 with heavy bolsters and hurricane bolsters and the sergeant taking gravcannon and grav amp twinned with an omniscope. Allowing him to separate fire to deal with something slightly more meaty.

5) the Iron Hands regenerating Raiders will be common I fear. A Master of the Forge in side it repairing a HP each turn on a 3+ and then Land Raider having It Will Not Die so gaining another on a 5+. If anyone puts more than one master of the forge / techmarine in it I will genuinely scream!!

6) the Raven Guard got a bit screwed over. Bonus to jump packs are nice, but stealth to all non-bulky models isn't that characterful given the fact that everyone with a jump pack is bulky....

7) I like the Hunter. It is dirt cheap and is a stupidly reliable piece of anti air. I don't like the Stalker's double firing gimmick- too unreliable personally.

8) GW are not unreasonable. Because the army builder part of my iCodex was not ready we got more free stuff. They added all the apocalypse data sheets for space marines in to the iCodex. I appreciate this. I now have half an army builder, they are yet to add the elites and fast attacks and a few other bits are missing. Once it is complete though I shall be reviewing it.

Sorry again about the haphazard and lackadaisical postings recently guys!!!

Friday 6 September 2013

A Slight Aside!

We now have less than 24 hours until the Launch of the forthcoming Marines Codex. I won't be jumping on the Bandwagon, in fact I have limited myself to 2 purchases. The first of these is the iCodex, I want to test out the GW in built army builder thingamajig. The second is a box of Centurions. I have recently been blitzing Tau (update soon I promise!) and fancy a challenge. And these fugly models are screaming challenge to me! I want to see if they are actually as bad as the pictures seem. I will update on Sunday with a verdict, some pictures and some random ramblings guys....

First Experience: Trial By Fire!

OK so last night I attended a "local" gaming club (20 miles isn't too bad!) for the first time and had an absolute hoot. Numerous friends have been going for years and since I finally bought a car (well 2 but it's a long story!) I thought I'd get some experience in with my Tau getting ready for Blog Wars. Matt and Toph are going to a doubles event later this week and were getting in practice with their 1200 point force (2 x 600 point forces with full force organisation options there are also no ally limitations for this) and let me say for a start they are going to do well. They are doing a Tyranid/Imperial Guard Combo that is justified using the term "Genestealer Cult". At 1200 points they had found enough room to take 2 Leman Russ Demolishers and 2 Flyrants!! That is Filth!!!! there was also plenty of guardsmen and a tiny unit of gaunts and some lonely lonely lonely Rippers (this unit gets my vote for Entity of the Match!).

Let the Climb Begin!

Ladles and Jellyspoons I have Tau!!!

I have not yet decided on what the army will include however I can say this, I have never been a WAAC competitive player- the mindset is anathema to me. So what have I started work on?

After browsing the Codex and scratching my brow I just purchased a swathe of miniatures I could see myself using (Fire Warriors, Broadsides and Riptide to begin with). I aim to make the army quite Farsight-y so Battlesuits aplenty I feel. I am also going to be "cheating" and using my airbrush for all basecoats- here is what I have done thus far....

Red!!!

Stay tuned for more soon though!

Uphill Struggle (Blog Wars 6 is the Summit)

So after my complete and utter failure to attend the previous Blog Wars I am finally ready to vent and talk about it all. I have tried to keep the Blog ticking over- somewhat ineffectually though I must say. And so the time has come to let it all out and get stuck back in.

The Long and The Short of it all is- my Wife left me. It threw my life into complete disarray and (in the nicest possible way) a tournament was the last thing on my mind. I am now however ready for the challenge and have already purchased a Ticket for Blog Wars 6. I am however now needing an army (everything got packed up in the great move and I can't be bothered to go through everything sorting it out yet) and as such I am buying a brand-spanking new army. Anybody who has read the few posts I have put up recently will have noticed I reviewed the iCodex iTau iEmpire iBook iThing, and thus my decision is made. I'm hopping on the bandwagon (devilfish) and going to do an army of these fish-faced-freaks. Not just any army though, oh no, last night as Insomnia gripped me I purchased the iCodex: iFarsight iEnclave iBook and so I am going to take a Farsight Enclave army to Blog Wars 6.

What the army will contain I do not yet know but at writing this I have 93 days to purchase and paint 1850 points (20 points a day seems achievable lol!). Please stay tuned as I post my decisions and progress. I want this to become a regular thing and to get a sense of normality back in my life- so if anyone wants to follow (and dare I say it, support me!) then all would be appreciated!!

Review: iCodex iTau iEmpire

Ok so my meteoric return to blogging has mostly been enabled by the selling of my soul and giving money to Apple Inc. so it seems only right that at some point I review a product that GW specifically released for the iPad. I speak, of course, of the iBook that is a Codex.

I decided to start my foray into these with the iCodex: Tau Empire because, with everything that was happening in my life at the time, the Tau somewhat passed me by. I am going to start out by saying that I am not disappointed at all by the iBook! It Fething Rocks!

For the price I am tempted to say it beats the hardbacks. They are wonderfully easy to work and the referencing is an absolutely fantastic feature. With a little getting used to I can now very quickly navigate the iBook and find anything I want very speedily.

Any piece of wargear or any weapon is easily referenced by clicking on it,bringing up a pop up box that gives you all necessary stats and rules for the applicable weapon/wargear, take a look;

My first game using the codex in a practical way won't be for a few weeks but once I actually get a game in I will definitely let you all know how it goes.

*edit* Ok so I left this entry as a draft at the end of the previous sentence. That evening I ended up having a few 500 point games using a Tau force. I was tempted to Bat-Rep them but for now I will stick to reviewing this iCodex. Simply put, absolutely brilliant! I simply kept it open on the glossary page and every time I needed to check something I just entered the first few letters in the search bar and Voila everything I ever needed! I honestly don't think I will be buying any more Hardback codices and all of mine in future will be iPurchases!!

We can only wait and see how quickly and efficiently the updates happen when GW releases FAQ's but for now I must say that I am one chuffed gamer!

The End is Nigh: Goodbye Apocalypse

Ok so this Blog entry was mostly written on Sunday but I have just done some final editing and tweaking here now and finally posted it;

So I am sat on the train, on my way to help Matt from Ex Instinctu Imperatorto set up his Apocalypse game for the end of his campaign. As I write this I am aware that this is the final Saturday that GW will recognise and support the current edition (a more profitable edition is coming) and thought this Blog entry would be a great time to look at this day as it progresses. I want to capture any moments of pure awesome and say Goodbye to This Apocalypse (a potential autobiography title there!) in proper fashion, so bear with me as I take you through my day.

09:18- sat on train, drinking copious amounts of Relentless and recovering from last night. A 1am Mexican Pizza was definitely one of the better ideas that I had. As a side note, random band from the Nags Head- well done on last night. I went out for a quiet drink with my mate and you made the night into something awesome. Instead of just having a quiet drink and catching up with someone, we instead ended up being serenaded with Deff Leopard, AC/DC, Metallica, Iron Maiden and many more that I will file under mildly drunken miscellaneous blur. You did an awesome job and I am sorry that the 2 of us seemed to be the only ones appreciative of your contribution to the atmosphere!!!

9:22 Leicester is in site and that means walking a bit of a way. My legs complain.

9:46 the view from the gaming room is

10:02 we have broken one of the 2 lifts to the 8th floor, good start! It is making the ominous grinding noise.

10:21 tables are set. All 3 of them

And here's our organiser;

10:41 the phrase "Yay Orgy!" was muttered

10:46 briefing has commenced, gaming to begin soon.

11:43 first casualty has happened. Perils took out a harlequin psyker before anything interesting happened at all!

12:30 LUNCH BREAK! MASS EXODUS TO SUBWAY!

unfortunately my iPad decided to wipe everything from this point and so I have no more! Head over to Matts Blog though because he has put some further details up!

Hobby Aids

Welcome to another Friday here at Something Wicked. I have decided to actually start planning my Blog entries and as such Sun/Mon will now feature my hobby updates (once a week is more than enough given the pace I work at sometimes) and then Friday's article will be on another Hobby Related Topic. So without further ado let me introduce the Topic of today's post; Hobby Aids in all their various forms and majestic glory.

This is a very interesting Topic and one that I recently discussed with Matt from over on Ex Instinctu Imperator. The reason I have chosen this topic is simple- I was prompted by the recent purchase of my iPad. Now I know I will suffer eternal damnation for willingly giving money to Apple, however I think it was worth it.

Of course the first thing any reasonable Hobbyists does once they have been assimilated by Apple (Resistance is Futile!) is to start looking at how this magnificent shiny device can improve their Hobbying! So for today I am just going to share a few of the pieces I have found.

First of all Quartermaster Army List Writer

This thing is amazing! The couple of quid it cost me are nothing and it is so easy and simple to find templates that have been put together. I already have put some of my more common Army Builds together in the favourite lists section for future use. To look at the product itself then. I like the interface, it is pretty self explanatory and easy to build units up with the wargear you want. Another function is the ability to just duplicate a unit you have already made (a spammers dream)!

Next we will look at something that is from Games Workshop. I spent a bit of time perusing what was available and then plumped for the How To Paint: Eldar guide.

 I was dubious because it is £10 but I must say that I am not disapponted. It covers various units (from memory it does Guardians, Wraithguard, Hemlock Wraithfighter, Wraithknight and Yriel) and each of these is done in a step by step guide. At the end of each section is a selection of other colour schemes along with all the paints that you would use following the methods covered (oh and Fire Dragons they are in there). I will definitely be looking at more of these in future, possibly the Tau one next. And the fact they are on my iPad just makes it easier for me as I am not flicking through countless pages hunting for that one specific bit.

This next one comes courtesy of Matt who,as I mentioned earlier, is running his own blog and we frequently have many a hobby related discussion (go follow that link to his Blog!). We also get the odd game in and this is something that will be looked at in future (the same battle report told from our respective sides). Anyway to get back to the current topic He mentioned how much he likes the psychic power cards. I completely agree with this one and in I am going to quote him-  "particularly for the Blessing/Malediction powers where you can just mark out the unit affected with the card". This is a perfect example of the versatility of the design, while a fantastic aid for reminding yourself what powers characters have, they can then double as markers for units that are being targeted by certain powers. It's makes me think maybe I should look into that Psychic Powers app that's out there...

Also on one final note, it would be remiss of me to not at least mention our old hobby faithful...

Venturing into the Webway!

Welcome back to Something Wicked. After my last post on Friday detailing the list that I plan on working on I though I would now show you some of my WIP shots so far;

First or all lets have a look at the Jetbikes that I am working on. This is my first unit of 6 Windriders and includes 2 of the GW finecast Shuriken Cannon upgrade kits. Now I am going to go off on a tangent here because I frequently hear people harping on about finecast and complaining that it is terrible. This has not been my experience. These Shuriken Cannnons are, at first glance, flawless. Yes there is some flash that needs cleaning up, and mould lines will have to be removed but apart from the norm there are no actual failures of note. Here's a shot of some of my prepped pieces (some pieces get undercoated black, others get undercoated grey)-

Once I got them built it was very easy to get them sprayed up and start airbrushing my basecoats on to them. I must say that even though these kits are quite old and dated they are still an absolute pleasure and definitely do not look out of place in the Eldar army also the fact that GW have just released the Shuriken Cannon upgrade pack in Finecast does not fill me with hope for new Jetbikes in the near future.

Unfortunately I ran out of time this weekend to sort everything out for this Blog entry and as such it is a little light. I will aim to get some better pictures up of everything I have achieved so far at some point to balance out the lack of pretty pictures in this entry.

I will leave you with this parting shot of some parts basecoated red!

That is all for now, I want to get this posted while I can!

Remember to check back in later in the week for another article.

DAMN THEM!

This is not a regular post. This is me venting!! Damn GW for emptying my wallet again! I have tried my hardest, but failed, to resist the Apocalypse goodness! so please enjoy this picture of Stephen Fry as it sums up my mindset in a quintessentially British manner.

Friday 28 June 2013

I'm Back Baby!!!

Ok so I am finally trying to get things sorted and thought that immersing myself in the blogosphere might be the way to go.... So bear with me while I get this blog back up off the ground. So, to quote Bender Bending Rodriguez,

To start with what has changed... The answer to that is "pretty much everything" . The last few months have been hell for me and I have abandoned practically everything that I was working on before (most of everything is now packed away in boxes in storage). That being said I have recently found that my hobby has been a great outlet and a great way for me to deal with everything. With this in mind, the primary focus of upcoming posts will be the building of my brand new Eldar army. New Start = New Army.

So where do I start? Well after my complete failure to make it to Blog Wars 5 (sorry guys, I was truly gutted by that!) let's start with my 500 point army list that I intend to start with as this will form the basis for my army that I will be taking to Blog Wars 6 in November. Oh yeah, important note, this army is for a tournament on the 2nd of November. So I have a few days over 4 months to get the army done. 1850 points in 4 months. That's only just over 450 points a month! Easy (if I later recant this I will buy the first person to mention it at Blog Wars 6 a pint!) so my 500 points for the coming month are;

Spiritseer (Plain and Basic)
5 Wraithguard (Wraithcannons)
Wave Serpent (Twin Scatter Laser, Shuriken Cannon & Holo Fields)
6 Windrider Jetbikes (2 Shuriken Cannons)

That all comes to just shy of 500 and is a legal army so I can start getting games under my belt. Stay tuned for more updates and to see how I get on!!! I will leave you with a picture of what I am working on at the minute....
First Squadron of Windrider Jetbikes, awaiting arrival of some Shuriken Cannon Kits

PS I also want to say thanks to all who have been so supportive recently, it truly has made such a difference for me. Cheers guys!

A Brief Hiatus

ok Guys, I sorry for the lack of posts recently. A lot has been going on and to be honest Hobby hasn't been the major focus of my life. I am in the process of getting everything sorted and I should soon make a spectacular return to blogging. In the meantime I thought I would leave you a small update. I will be returning from the Webway soon and a Craftworld will follow....

Product Review: Dark Art Miniatures Rocky Bases

So as those of you reading may have gathered, I am currently working on a Daemon Army for 40k. Early on in the project I decided that I wanted to take my time and lavish a bit extra on these guys so I decided to try out some resin bases from Dark Art Miniatures. This is the review of what I received.

Blog Wars 5 Final Army List (almost!)

Ok so after much deliberation, music and discussion with Luke we have both finally just about sorted our army lists for Blog Wars. There were many interesting things discussed and it was an absolute god-send to have another input on the army list as he was just thinking about thing's that i hadn't considered and vice versa (best piece of advise I have given to date is why are you taking a Rhino when you can get an Immolator with Twin Multi-Melta's; if this proves problematic to anyone on the day, I apologise!)

So carry on reading to see what i have decided upon

Thursday 28 March 2013

Further Musings

So I have been frequently revisiting my 1850 list for Blog Wars 5 and doodling other ideas out and I wanted to quickly share a  few of these with you and hopefully get some feedback;

-I currently have about 80 points spare.

- Needed more Scoring Units- Dropped Surplus units of Nurglings taking only one larger unit and means i can now take a unit of 15 Plague Bearers, a unit of 10 Plaguebearers, a unit of 20 horrors and a unit of 10 horrors! that should give the army a lot more body.

- I am debating dropping 2 of the Plague Drones and just fielding 3. This would free up nearly 100 points which I would possibly look at investing in a unit of Flamers..... the option here would be to use these 100 points and the other 80 i already have free and take a second Nurgle Soul Grinder.......

so that is it so far... any thoughts guys?

Battle Report 1- IG / Marine Combo

First a note- these reports won't be a turn by turn basis report but more my recollections of key moments that I can learn from and look to use in future games.

Model Review: Herald of Nurgle

So I thought I would start an infrequent series of reviews. Nothing major, I will just write reviews of Models i get that I like or dislike. I won't be doing it for everything but only when I feel like it- it is my hobby after all!

So let's start off with this guy....

This is not my version of the model!

Tuesday 12 March 2013

Trial By Fire V2.00

So after yesterday's attempt at an army list and some very valid feedback I have made some changes to the army. I have dropped several rewards and some Nurglings to free up points (they were only a cheap harassing infiltrating unit anyway) and, the biggest change, I have dropped the Burning Chariot. This means i had enough points free to plump for a Nurgle Soulgrinder which should prove to be far more survivable overall! Without further delay, here is the list.....

Monday 11 March 2013

Trial by Fire

So this coming Saturday I am getting together with both Luke Fogg and Matt Calow (both of whom i could potentially be facing at Blog Wars!) for some 1000 point games. This will be my first major excursion with the New Daemon Codex. I could be up against Guard or Sisters (Luke) or Guard, Orks or Space Marines (Matt). I intend to have a single list that will take on all-comers and have spent a while debating it. This is where it stands at the moment.....

WIP Update

Quick update from iPod! WIP shot of one of my Plague Drones!

Tuesday 5 March 2013

Constant State of Change

After the first draft yesterday, several people came forward with great idea's and some of these I have tried to work in! Keep the idea's coming, I will be getting test games in shortly with this army list (and A LOT of proxying!). A special shout out to Hendrik for his suggestion to maybe ally in CSM as that was what i was previously working on, I did consider it and I have a small allied section written up involving a unit of Havocs with Autocannons, some cultists, an Aegis Line and a Sorcerer..... May try it out!

A Pretty Picture to Brighten the Blog!

Anyway, keep reading for my revised list!

Monday 4 March 2013

and now for something completely different.

So my previous army was an utter disaster. However salvation may have just burst out of the Warp! That's right i am going to attempt a Daemon army. i have 3 and a bit months and 1850 points to sort. let's see what happens here!

I have written my first provisional list and present it for your musings. Please please please comment on it because i need all the feedback I can gather. I have put notes by units where appropriate explaining my choices...

Monday 25 February 2013

Total Recall!

Time to wipe the slate clean and start again! I got in a couple of games over the weekend (my first of 6th) with my mate Luke and his Blog Wars List and realised the utter filth i was facing. Off the top of my head he had taken a large number of guard (there was definitely a giant blob!) more heavy weapons than i could shake a stick at (autocannons and lascannons!) allied Sisters including one squad of sisters in rhino, a squad of flamer dominions in a rhino and St Celestine. oh and before i forget; 2 MANTICORES! (I hate these things).

Wednesday 20 February 2013

Tiny Update!

Just thought i would put up a  small written up date of where I am up to!

Since Sunday I have;
- Painted the Base Layers on 14 Plague Marines and now need to detail them
- Painted the Base Layers on 28 Plague Zombies and now need to detail them
- Built 10 Plague Bearers and have started the Base Layers of them
- Stuck Typhus on to a base

4 Days and I have done that, I think i wil be please with myself.

Tuesday 19 February 2013

Introducing Painting Points

I have made the decision to add Painting Points to this Blog, for me to numerically track my progress. I will be completely honest and say that I am blatantly ripping this off of numerous other blogs I read! On the right I have included the details for how I will be scoring this and although you can see progress in some photos already posted, no Points will be awarded until finished pictures are up on the Blog!

Monday 18 February 2013

Argh......Zombies!!!

Ok so the Title says it all! I started work on my Plague Zombies. The First image below shows them amongst some Plague Marines (they are the white blurs!). I apologise for the shoddy photographs but they were shot using my iPod on a whim. I wanted to measure how much i did in a day!

The second photo actually is 28 Zombies fully painted (apart from bases). I may go back and add some detailing to them if I get time but once the bases are done I am happy these guys are of table top quality.

So to Summarise. One lazy Sunday Afternoon means 28 Zombies completed (just about). Makes me feel a bit more confident about the rest of the army now the main Horde unit is practically out of the way!

As a side note, you may be looking at the models wondering as to my choice. I have decided to use Goblins from GW's The Hobbit range because a) the are available in bulk and b) they actually work! they are slightly stunted, covered in pustules and ramshackle weapons and bones. They are not necessarily "human" plague zombies. After all many Imperial planets have "Sub-Human" denizens! what od you think? (I even have GW's blessing with this as i wanted to confirm if I took them to the Throne of Skulls they would be allowed! and they agreed and said that it was actually a very good idea!)

Tuesday 12 February 2013

Time to Revise

So as you may notice from my To Do list on the right hand side, one of my jobs is to re-write my Army List (possibly frequently) in the vain hope of improving it. Here is my first (and quite major revision if I am honest). Where possible I am providing justification for the changes. If you have any opinions on the changes please feel free to let me know!

Saturday 9 February 2013

My Muse

I have been having a chat with my mate Luke about the provisional army list I have put together and he has confirmed my worries. I am seriously going to struggle with any AV13 / AV14 and think I need to work something out. My first thought was to address another issue we identified- the speed of the army. One possibility is to give the Plague Marine unit with Melta a Rhino with Combi melta, this would get them into the fight quicker and gets me an additional melta  shot to pop something armoured. The question is, is it enough. A Rhino isn't exactly that survivable and the unit could well end up walking anyway. If i did that I would have 3 meltaguns (one on the rhino and 2 in the plague marine squads) and Ku'Gath who can take out AV14, will this be enough? I think some test games are in order! if anybody has any suggestions, please share them!

"Tis the times' plague, when madmen lead the Blind"

So I have a ticket to BlogWars5.... and this blog will track my progress towards it. I swore that this year i would complete an army and a tournament so here we go......

After having a think about this, I have settled on taking my Death Guard army to Blog Wars. So now on to think about what is required. For a start I am required to take a Special Character so Typhus it is. I also have a fear of anything airborne so an Aegis Line with Quadgun is a must too I think.

-Edit- I have now updated the army list below as i start tweaking it. While a second Heldrake would have been nice i decided that upgrades to Aspiring Champions would be a nice option (I am not a power player) and the inclusion of the nurglings gives me another unit (with a bucket load of wounds!)! I still have 20 points to play with and I am toying with just giving each Aspiring Champion for the Plague Marines a Mutation..... now i need to decide how many daemon princes i should paint for the day!
